According to the count elDiario.es published on 1 September 2026, more than 80 festivals have been cancelled in Spain this year: at least thirty over economic risk, a similar number over lack of institutional support or tensions with town councils, and more than a dozen over torrential rain, wind, fire risk or heatwaves. It comes nine months after the close of 2025, a year the APM Yearbook put at €807.2 million in box office, up 11.24% on 2024.

Live music closed 2025 with €807.2 million in box office, up 11.24% on 2024. Nine months later, elDiario.es counts more than 80 festivals cancelled in 2026.

What happened

The count was published by elDiario.es on 1 September, based on promoters' statements. According to that count, at least thirty fell over economic risk, mostly because ticket sales never took off; a similar number over lack of institutional support or tensions with the local council; and more than a dozen, wholly or partly, over torrential rain, wind, fire risk or heatwaves. By region: Galicia and Catalonia, ten each; Comunitat Valenciana, nine; Madrid and Andalusia, eight; Castile and León, seven.

Four of those cases, verified against their source.

The Menorca Music Festival (Es Mercadal, 1 to 9 August) was cancelled on 27 July, five days before it was due to start. The statement cited "unforeseen force majeure beyond the organisers' control" (La Ganzúa). On 5 August the organisers were still working out how to refund tickets.

The Kalikenyo Rock (Juneda, Lleida), due to take place on 11 and 12 September, was cancelled on 11 August with 241 advance tickets sold. The organisers announced a full refund to those 241 buyers and called the festival off.

The Festival de les Arts (Valencia, 5 and 6 June) lost the Saturday: València City Council and CACSA reported that noise limits set following a court ruling had been exceeded on the Friday. According to Valencia Plaza, the cap was 85 decibels by day and 80 by night; the local police measured more than 96 at the main stage. The organisers announced refunds of 100% for Saturday tickets, 50% for season passes and the remaining balance on wristbands.

The Here Comes The Summer Fest (Bilbao, Sala Crazy Horse, 21 June) was cancelled on the 19th over the heatwave. The statement cited a forecast of 43 degrees and closed by saying it was "for health, responsibility and various recommendations" (La Ganzúa).

Why it matters

These are two different speeds. The €807.2 million from the APM Yearbook is a national total, and our own analysis already noted that 2025's growth didn't extend beyond summer. That figure doesn't describe each festival's own accounts: Kalikenyo closed with 241 tickets sold. And the cases point to three distinct risks. Les Arts is acoustic and regulatory. Kalikenyo is economic. Bilbao is climate-driven. Menorca, which cited force majeure, offers another lesson: the refund is a cancellation's second bill. We already covered the Reggaeton Beach Festival, which cancelled all seven of its 2026 dates over a lack of viability, here.

What to do with this

  • Before selling, get the venue's noise limit in writing, and check whether it stems from a court ruling. In Valencia the cap was 85 by day and 80 by night; the main stage hit more than 96.
  • Sort out refund logistics before announcing anything. Kalikenyo communicated it along with the cancellation; Menorca was still working it out nine days later.
  • A heat protocol with a decision threshold and a notice deadline. In Bilbao the call was made with two days' notice and a forecast of 43 degrees.
