iDEAL announced on 28 October 2025 that from 2026 it will be rebranded as "iDEAL | Wero", the first step in a gradual transition towards Wero, the European digital wallet that the same announcement puts at more than 45 million users across Europe. iDEAL's official page on the transition describes phases — shared branding, technical migration and a final stage in which Wero will be the only name consumers see — but publishes no phase-out dates: the dated timetable comes from Thuiswinkel.org, the Dutch e-commerce association, which places the disappearance of the iDEAL name from the checkout screen at the end of 2027. For anyone selling tickets online in the Netherlands, the conversation isn't with the bank, but with the payment gateway behind their ticketing platform.

iDEAL announced on 28 October 2025 that from 2026 it will be rebranded as "iDEAL | Wero". This isn't just a new logo: behind it lies the migration of the method used to pay for 73% of Dutch online purchases, according to the latest figure published by iDEAL itself, back in April 2024.

What iDEAL has announced

The official announcement fits in one line: from 2026, iDEAL is rebranded as "iDEAL | Wero", the first step in the gradual transition to Wero. The same text describes Wero as the European digital wallet already used by more than 45 million Europeans.

The official page on the transition talks about phases, not fixed dates: shared branding from early 2026 with the "iDEAL | Wero" logo, a gradual technical migration to the Wero platform, and a final stage in which Wero will be the only name consumers see. That same page explicitly asks providers to adapt their systems to the new standard in good time, so that the customer experience stays smooth and consistent.

The dates don't come from iDEAL

iDEAL's official website publishes no phase-out date. The timetable comes from Thuiswinkel.org, the Dutch e-commerce association: "iDEAL | Wero" labelling on checkout screens from early 2026; transactions moving to the Wero platform from April 2026; the first online shops fully migrated by the end of 2026; the iDEAL name disappearing from the checkout screen by the end of 2027; purchase protection from 1 January 2028; and a new cost structure from 2029, when the fee cap expires.

The same association explains who's in charge: Wero is run by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), made up of European banks and payment providers, which acquired Currence — the entity behind the iDEAL scheme — in 2023.

Why it matters

The scale of what's moving was given by iDEAL itself in an April 2024 article: 1,300 million transactions a year, 73% of all Dutch online purchases. A second measure, the Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor as reported by iDEAL, puts that share at 69% in the third quarter of 2022 and in that of 2023. iDEAL publishes no more recent figure.

For anyone selling tickets there, what's in front of them isn't a new label at checkout, but the lane their purchases run through. And the conversation isn't with a bank: it's with the payment gateway behind their ticketing platform. A Spanish promoter with a date in Amsterdam — or anyone who's already wrestled with how entry works at Dutch trade fairs — doesn't negotiate any of this: they inherit it from their provider.

What to do about it

Thuiswinkel.org recommends four checks for merchants. This is its list, not a set of obligations or confirmed changes.

Ask your payment provider for the migration plan. When it migrates and what it requires on the merchant's side.

Review the contract and fee structure. How the signed terms will stand.

Prepare the checkout screen for the new logo. It's the first thing to change.

Compare iDEAL's flat per-transaction fee with the percentage-based fees expected under Wero. This is a check recommended by the association, not a confirmed price rise: Wero's pricing for merchants has not been published.

Every market has its own dominant method and its own checklist. For the Spanish market, payment methods for events.
